Asset Name is only Partially imported when performing Asset Import

Q.We created a .csv file to import a list of assets into the CMMS system. However, we encountered an issue with the Asset Name only being partially imported.

---

A. Remember, CSV = Comma Separated Variable so each comma represents the start of the next variable. The file import uses comma separated variables so if you have commas within your asset names, you may experience such issues.

You can comment out the commas with quotation marks.  In that case, Torque wrench, 30cm would be imported into the CMMS as "Torque wrench, 30cm"

I have retested with your data and I noticed when the file is opened in Excel, everything looks normal. However, when you open it in textedit, you see additional quotation marks " around the asset name. These are also used in the asset name around the size of the asset - 30" handle, etc.

Asset Name,Category,Asset Code,Make,Serial #,Location,Owner,Personnel Code
"Torgue Gauge, 30"" Handle, 15k ft-lb SN: 816404",Torque Gauge System,TG1001,,816404,L01,TubeTek,U1003
"Torgue Gauge, 30"" Handle, 15k ft-lb SN: 7016",Torque Gauge System,TG1002,,7016,L01,TubeTek,U1003
"Torgue Gauge, 30"" Handle, 15k ft-lb SN: 7017",Torque Gauge System,TG1003,,7017,L01,TubeTek,U1003
"Torgue Gauge, 30"" Handle, 15k ft-lb SN: 7018",Torque Gauge System,TG1004,,7018,L01,TubeTek,U1003

We cleaned up you file in textedit to remove the additional " marks around 30:

Asset Name,Category,Asset Code,Make,Serial #,Location,Owner,Personnel Code
"Torgue Gauge, 30' Handle, 15k ft-lb SN: 816404",Torque Gauge System,TG1001,,816404,L01,TubeTek,U1003
"Torgue Gauge, 30' Handle, 15k ft-lb SN: 7016",Torque Gauge System,TG1002,,7016,L01,TubeTek,U1003
"Torgue Gauge, 30' Handle, 15k ft-lb SN: 7017",Torque Gauge System,TG1003,,7017,L01,TubeTek,U1003

When we import the file now, the commas are protected inside the quotation marks. See above.

Note - Watch out for double or triple " marks. They may not show up in excel but remember the file format is CSV so it is best to verify in notepad or textedit. In this example, Excel created double quotation marks so the import failed.

We did a Find/Replace for "" and replaced with blank to get following and it worked ok:
