Labor Tasks are individual work instructions that users can follow, and sign off, while they complete a work order. The procedure for adding labor tasks to a work order can be found in the following article Getting Started With Work Orders
Individual labor tasks can also be grouped into task groups. For more information on task groups, see the Task Groups article.
Types of Labor Tasks
There are 3 types of labor tasks:
- General - A basic task that does not require any additional information, and that can be checked off once completed.
- Text Result - Text Result creates an editable box below the Results column in the task list. This is useful for task items that may require additional information such as ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ entry, or specific codes.
- Meter Reading - Meter readings function in a similar way as text results, and create an editable field in the Result column. Meter readings can be customized to different units such as hours, meters, cycles, production hours etc, in the same way as other areas of the CMMS.
The screenshots below show how to create each type of task. By default every task will be created as a general task. To change this, you simply create the task, and choose your task type at the bottom field in the pop up. When choosing a meter reading task, you will also have the option of choosing which type of unit you want to record, i.e Hours, Production Hours, Miles etc.

The three different type of tasks are displayed in the Labor Tasks tab. Meter reading and text result tasks have an icon to the left of the task description. The Result field is where the reading, or text results are added.
Completing a Labor Task
1) To complete a General Task simply check off the button highlighted below
Checking off the labor task auto populates the completion time, and date within the task itself. The user who checks off the task will be listed in the Completed By User field. This process adds any labor costs incurred by the users hourly rate to the work order.
It is important to save the work order after completing each task.
2) Follow these steps to complete a meter reading labor task.
- Ensure the work order is saved.
- Add a meter reading in Result field
- Save the work Order
- Check the labor task off as complete
Take great care when entering a meter reading result. Any meter reading that triggers a scheduled maintenance cannot be deleted.
3) To Complete a text result task, you follow the steps outlined above for the meter reading task.
Your tasks will now be marked as complete and you can close your work Order.
Visual Operating Procedures
With our new Visual Operating Procedures you can add files to specific tasks. Items such as pdf manuals, images and videos can be attached to tasks. This feature is extremely useful for any complex tasks. Adding a file containing step by step details to complete the task, means that work can be carried out more efficiently.
1) To add files, open a task, and click on the Attached Files And Media button.
2) Add files by dragging and dropping your files into the box, or manually by selecting the New button. Once the file is added, check off the file, and click OK to add it to the task.
3) The file will be displayed on the task. Click OK to complete.
Add additional Labor to your Labor Task
The Add Labor button allows user to add additional labor to a task.
1) To add labor to a task click Add Labor on the task.
2) Add the relevant information to the extra labor, and click OK
3) The added labor will be displayed directly below the task.
